Master Artist Workshops

THE PROGRAM

Our master artist workshops are an alternative environment for unconventional explorations, learning and artistic development, aimed at both nurturing and stimulating the participants' existing practices. The workshops are led by master artists, scholars, writers and other experts in their fields. Laberinto Institute provides opportunities for established and emerging artists alike. We strive to cultivate creative exploration by providing inspiring settings which encourage intercultural, interdisciplinary and intergenerational dialogues.

The workshop lasts one week. We run each program with 6-10 participants. The workshop fee includes tuition, shared housing and meals for the duration of the workshop. Artists of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply for admission. A working knowledge of English or Spanish is necessary.

We believe that through this historic site and its mission we can foster deep knowledge and appreciation for the cultural heritage of the region. Interactions with the cultural and environmental contexts of the location are encouraged. There will be opportunities for excursions, cultural visits and exchanges with working artists in El Salvador.

Our umbrella organization, laberinto projects, manages multiple projects and initiatives to support its mission to foster contemporary art practices, social inclusion and dialogue in El Salvador and its diaspora through exhibitions, art education, artist residencies and community engagement initiatives.

THE SPACE

Please read more about the rich cultural history of Laberinto Institute HERE.

Because the house is a shared living space, participants are asked to be sensitive to others’ needs and to the site as a whole. Some basic tools and materials may be available, but in general, artists should plan to bring anything they need or make arrangements to acquire materials while they are here (let us know if you need help facilitating this). We can support work that takes place outdoors, in shared space, in domestic space, and by creative producers who can bring their own equipment and materials.

SCHOLARSHIPS

We offer two $500 scholarships to each residency. Additionally, once a year we offer one fully funded residency to Central Americans living in the region. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and due at least three months prior to the start of the residency.
